Keeping fit doesn't have to mean spending your valuable time working out in a sweaty, noisy gym, or feeling self-conscious in lycra in an aerobics studio. There are many different ways to get exercise. Find one you enjoy, and it won't feel like a chore. Treadmill safety

Adjusting to the motion of a treadmill isn’t difficult, but it does take a bit of practice. After a couple of sessions, though, you will find yourself striding out with confidence. The key to safety is to hold onto the handrail and set a slow starting speed of 0.5mph or even less.

Check before you buy that the treadmill has an emergency shut-off – and make sure you use it. If you don’t, and you lose concentration or co-ordination even for a moment, you can end up with nastily skinned shins or worse. The treadmill should also have a built-in speed and incline limit; gentle, graduated start-up and slow-down speeds; and good hand rails for both running and walking modes.
